US towing and payload planning

Check the towing limits that real-world loading can change.

TowLoad Guide compares people, cargo, hitch hardware, and trailer weight with the manufacturer limits you select or enter. It shows each available margin and leaves a check unresolved when a required value is missing.

One worksheet, separate limits

See what can be checked—and what cannot.

Enter loaded weights and available ratings to see signed margins for payload, towing, GVWR, GCWR, and hitch or tongue limits without hiding unknowns behind one score.

Start with a vehicle

Choose a published configuration to fill only the ratings supported by its source. Current verified coverage includes conventional-towing data for the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2026 Ford F-150, 2026 Ram 1500, and 2026 GMC Sierra 1500.

Use the exact label

The occupant-and-cargo label on your vehicle is more specific than a generic configuration reference. Use the label override when that value is available.

Read every result

A positive or negative margin applies only to the limit checked. Missing payload, GVWR, curb-weight, or hitch information stays visibly Not checked.

Verified reference coverage

222 reviewed physical configurations across four trucks.

The 2025 Silverado reference preserves 51 configurations and 102 ratings. The 2026 F-150 reference preserves 63 physical configurations, 65 contexts, and 130 observations. The 2026 Ram 1500 reference preserves 26 physical configurations, 27 contexts, and 54 observations. The 2026 Sierra 1500 reference preserves 23 physical configurations, 54 contexts, and 108 observations. Multi-context configurations remain explicit.

Review the 2025 Silverado 1500 ratings, review the 2026 F-150 ratings, review the 2026 Ram 1500 ratings, or review the 2026 Sierra 1500 ratings.

Coverage is intentionally narrow
Other manufacturers, model years, fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings, and unsupported configuration-specific values are not published. Nothing is estimated to fill those gaps.

Traceable by design

Know where a reference value came from.

Vehicle data passes source transcription, schema checks, independent row review, and a fail-closed publication gate before appearing in the selector or reference page.

Understand the numbers

Learn which rating answers which question.

These source-reviewed guides separate trailer, payload, vehicle, combination, and axle limits before you enter a scenario.

Tongue weight and payload

Follow tongue load through payload arithmetic without counting it twice in a hitched scale measurement.

GVWR, GCWR, and GAWR

Match each manufacturer rating with the actual loaded weight needed for that comparison.

Common questions

Before you calculate

Does a maximum tow rating apply to every truck with the same model name?

No. Ratings can differ by cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, package, wheels, trim, equipment, and loading. Match the complete configuration and confirm the exact vehicle documentation.

Why does payload matter when towing?

Passengers, cargo, accessories, hitch hardware, and trailer tongue or pin weight all consume available payload. A trailer can be below a tow rating while another applicable limit is closer.

What if I do not know a required rating?

Leave it unknown. TowLoad Guide marks the dependent result Not checked instead of substituting zero or an estimate. Vehicle labels, the Owner's Manual, manufacturer guides, and loaded scale weights can supply more-specific inputs.

Does a result certify the combination?

No. Results compare arithmetic inputs with selected or entered limits. They do not account for every equipment, loading, mechanical, road, weather, driver, or jurisdiction factor.
